Ask a Word

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Here’s a fairly decent reference site that includes spelling alternatives, dictionary definitions and encyclopedia entries. It appears that it is just a front end for Wikipedia and Wiktionary, which aren’t the best sources, but still pretty good for a quick check while away from your desk.

Loving the iPhone

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

So it has been nearly two months since I first got my iPhone. I have to say I’m pretty pleased. I got my first mobile phone back in 1999, and didn’t really use it much. I got a PDA even before that, but never really used it as it was intended. When I got my SideKick back in 2004, I saw the benefits of combining the two and began to use both more. But now that I have easy, full Web access and a great interface, I’m finally using my phone/PDA to the fullest with the iPhone.
How has your experience been?

TV Forecast

Monday, August 20th, 2007

I like this TV Forecast app because of the good design, and they realize they can use cookies instead of user accounts. Other sites should take note of this. You can make a list of your favorite TV shows, and then count down to when they will be on next. Not sure where the info comes from, as different counties may have different schedules. But, hey, 33 days until Heroes comes back!

Freebird!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

OK, this just made me laugh. I used to go to a lot of rock concerts when I was in college. That was back in the late 80s, early 90s. At the end of the show you held up a lighter to encourage the group to come back for the encore they already planned. I stopped going to shows in the mid 90s, so I was surprised when I went recently that mobile phones have replaced lighters. Just hold up your phone and turn it on, let it glow with the backlight. Well, if you have an iPhone, Rocklighter.com is a great way to get the best of both worlds.

JiveTalk IM

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

So I’m not a big IM guy. As a programmer, it interrupts my work too much. But even I agree that the lack of iChat on the iPhone is a big issue. It seems that everyone agrees that JiveTalk from BeeJive is the way to go here. I agree. Big points for looking like iChat. And also for working with all the protocols: .Mac, Google, Yahoo, Windows, Jabber, ICQ and AIM. I was able to get my accounts all up on the screen and seem my friends in no time.
