Headphone Adapters

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

I just saw a second third-party headphone adapter for $10. The reason these $10 things exist is that the headphone jack on the iPhone, for some strange reason, is too small for standard headphone jacks. So you are stuck with the earbuds that come with the iPhone, and can’t use anything better, or jack into your car without a dock.
I hate that such a simple adapter is $10. So I made my own, my modifying something that costs only $2. I did a video on it for MacMost. Here’s an iPhone version of that video.

FaceBook for the iPhone

Friday, August 17th, 2007

FaceBook happens to be my favorite social networking site. They’ve got the best design and features. And now they’ve got an iPhone version of the site that is excellent as well. Check it out. I usually only accept real-life friends as FaceBook friends, but if you add me as a friend and specify in the invite that you read iPhone Dispatch, and I’ll add you. Just search for Gary Rosenzweig.

Yahoo for iPhone?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

If you go to this Yahoo! page, it seems to suggest that there is a version of Yahoo built for the iPhone. But no link is given on the page, just a link to buy the iPhone. The main Yahoo mobile page has a similar issue as it loves to tell you about Yahoo mobile, but doesn’t give you any links to it. I think it is pushing a downloadable application for other phones, but it is not clear. It does say “Yahoo! is now on the Apple iPhone” but that just links to the other page.
A little more searching and guessing and I found a mobile version of Yahoo! which obviously made for much more basic phones than the iPhone. But it might still be a good alternative for getting results fast while using the Edge network.
So, what’s up Yahoo? Is there an iPhone version of your services? Or are you just simply saying that Yahoo.com works on the iPhone, which really isn’t saying anything.

White Pages

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

You’d think that looking up a phone number would be a perfect use of an iPhone. But White Pages sites don’t seem to recognize the mobile market at all. I tried most of the major white page services and none had mobile interfaces. One well-known name linked me to another site entirely, and that site gave me a crappy pop-up ad on the page. I was not pleased. And the mobile offerings by Yahoo and Google don’t seem to have any white page services. I found plenty of downloadable phone applications, none of which work on the iPhone.
I found one site at http://people.aapl.org.uk that has an iPhone interface for a people database. Ironic that I have to use a UK site on a US phone to look up US phone numbers. Seems to work, though.
If you know of another white pages site that works well in a mobile browser, let me know.

Comparison Shopping

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Like most smartphones, the iPhone is great while shopping. The ’sale’ item you are looking at in the store may have a $100 discount, but is that lower than Amazon? A quick way to find out is to use Amazon’s mobile interface. Better still, you can read customer reviews, although some of those can be misleading.
A site that has an iPhone interface is iSave. This will bring up prices from different online stores, so you get a good general range of what the product should be selling for.
